Figure 22: Landscape map of the Mpumalanga region. This shows admirably the relationship between landscape and geology. The high ground is shown in tones of brown and yellow, ending at the partly dissected Great Eastern Escarpment, while the Eastern Lowveld is shown in blueish-grey. The Barberton Mountain Land (also known as the Makhonjwa Mountains) appears in the southeast, extending into Swaziland.

Figure 23: Geological map of the Mpumalanga region. In the west the geology is dominated by the Transvaal Supergroup, intruded by the Eastern Limb of the Bushveld Complex. In the east the granite-gneiss of the Basement underlies the Eastern Lowveld, while in the southeast there are Archaean greenstones of the famous Barberton Supergroup (also known as the Barberton Greenstone Belt).
